You Passed the CLP Test—What Comes Next?
Follow the correct sequence for permit restrictions, ELDT completion, supervised practice, and the CDL skills test.
Check every detail on the permit
Verify your name, license class, endorsements, restrictions, issue date, and expiration date. Keep the permit with the required base license and medical documentation. Report any error to the issuing agency promptly.
Complete the required ELDT components
First-time Class A or Class B applicants, Class B-to-A upgrades, and first-time applicants for certain endorsements generally must complete the applicable ELDT curriculum with a registered provider. Confirm that successful completion is reported before scheduling the relevant test.
Practice only under lawful supervision
Follow your state’s rules for accompanying drivers, vehicle class, endorsements, time or location restrictions, and required documents. Practice should cover inspection, control skills, and public-road operation—not only the maneuver you find easiest.
Plan the skills-test window
Federal rules generally require a CLP holder to wait at least 14 days before taking the CDL skills test, while states may impose additional scheduling or validity requirements. Confirm the current process with your state licensing agency.
