FMCSA Says Motus Fix Is Still Weeks Away, With No Full Repair Date

FMCSA's deputy administrator says the Motus registration system is improving but still lacks a firm stabilization date, while temporary biennial-update relief and support procedures remain in place.

FMCSA still has not set a full-repair date

At an industry event on October 26, FMCSA Deputy Administrator Jesse Elison said the agency expects Motus stabilization work to take weeks rather than months, but he did not provide a firm completion date. He acknowledged that the system's controls have blocked more legitimate users than intended, while saying conditions have improved from the first weeks after launch. For carriers, brokers, freight forwarders, and other registrants, the practical message is that Motus remains the required registration platform but should not yet be treated as fully stabilized.

Motus controls core USDOT registration actions

FMCSA launched Motus in May as the central system for applying for a USDOT Number or operating authority, claiming an existing company record, updating business information, submitting biennial updates, managing registrations, and controlling authorized access. A Motus problem can therefore affect more than a routine website login. It can delay a new application, reinstatement, legal-name or address change, company-account claim, insurance-related workflow, or another action needed before lawful operations can begin or continue.

Biennial-update enforcement relief remains limited

FMCSA's official notice says it temporarily suspended enforcement of the biennial-update requirement and USDOT-number inactivation for registrants whose update was due on or after June 1, 2026. Those registrants receive additional time while recovery and stabilization continue. The notice does not cancel the underlying filing requirement, erase an earlier deadline, grant operating authority, or excuse unrelated registration, insurance, safety, tax, state, or licensing obligations.

Do not postpone an urgent registration action

Elison advised users without an immediate need to avoid unnecessary activity while stabilization continues, but carriers with time-sensitive business should not simply wait. Confirm the exact action required, its deadline, the company official authorized to complete it, and every supporting document before entering Motus. If the system blocks a necessary filing, document the error and contact FMCSA promptly rather than assuming the temporary biennial-update relief covers the problem.

Use one support ticket and preserve the case record

FMCSA directs users to its support page for Motus issues and specifically says not to create duplicate tickets for the same case. Save the ticket number, submission time, screenshots or exact error text, the USDOT Number, the affected action, and any response from the agency. Follow up on the existing case instead of restarting it through multiple channels, because duplicate cases can make ownership and status harder to track.

FMCSA lists phone, chat, alerts, and self-service help

The agency's current support notice lists the Registration Customer Service Center at 1-800-832-5660 and directs users to the online contact tools for phone, chat, or a ticket. It also points users to Registration Alerts, the Motus video library, job aids, and the public Motus search. Operating hours and procedures can change, so verify them on the official page at the time help is needed instead of relying on a saved screenshot or an old third-party guide.

A common account-role problem has an official workaround

FMCSA's Registration Alerts page addresses carriers whose email was inadvertently registered under the Transportation Service Provider role. The agency says the user can close that TSP account from its settings; if the option to link a USDOT Number remains unavailable afterward, the user should submit a ticket with the USDOT Number, company official's name and Login.gov email, and proof of company ownership. Follow that procedure only when it matches the actual account problem.

Company access should remain controlled and verifiable

Existing registrants generally need the company official to claim the USDOT record using the same Login.gov email associated with the FMCSA Portal. Carriers should confirm who owns the company account, remove access that is no longer appropriate, and avoid sharing credentials. Before giving documents or payment information to a registration service, verify the provider independently and remember that official FMCSA help and public record searches are available through federal sites.

Drivers should verify the carrier's status before dispatch

A company driver usually does not manage the motor carrier's Motus account, but registration problems can still affect whether a vehicle may operate under the expected authority. Safety and compliance staff should communicate any restriction clearly. Drivers should use company channels to confirm the USDOT Number and operating-authority status when a problem is reported, and should never treat a pending support ticket as proof that an inactive or missing authority has been restored.

What remains unknown after the October 26 update

FMCSA has not announced a final stabilization date or a date for resuming normal biennial-update enforcement. It also has not said that every user or transaction is affected in the same way. Carriers should watch the official Registration Alerts and temporary-relief page for written changes, use Motus only for the actions they actually need, and build additional lead time into registrations, reinstatements, ownership changes, and other filings until the agency confirms normal operation.

Educational summaries help you prepare, but official FMCSA and state licensing sources remain the authority for current requirements.
