FMCSA Schedules a One-Hour CDL Verification Outage for September 17
Clearinghouse users will be unable to verify driver CDL information from 8 to 9 p.m. Eastern Time on September 17 while the CDLIS Gateway undergoes maintenance.
The verification interruption is scheduled for Thursday evening
FMCSA has posted a notice on the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse stating that users will not be able to verify driver commercial driver's license information on Thursday, September 17, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time. The agency says the interruption is due to maintenance on the Commercial Driver Licensing Information System, or CDLIS, Gateway. The equivalent start time is 7 p.m. Central, 6 p.m. Mountain and 5 p.m. Pacific.
The notice is narrower than a complete Clearinghouse shutdown
FMCSA's announcement specifically addresses verification of driver CDL information. It does not say that every page or function in the Clearinghouse will be unavailable for the full hour. Employers, consortium or third-party administrators and drivers should therefore avoid describing the event as a total system outage. At the same time, any workflow that depends on confirming CDL data should be scheduled outside the maintenance window when possible.
Maintenance does not suspend employer query duties
The scheduled interruption does not waive or extend the requirements in 49 CFR 382.701. Before allowing a driver covered by Part 382 to perform a safety-sensitive function, an employer must conduct the required pre-employment full query and obtain the driver's specific electronic consent. Employers must also query the Clearinghouse at least once per year for every covered driver. A planned technology window is a reason to organize the work earlier, not permission to dispatch without the required result.
Protect time-sensitive hiring and return-to-duty decisions
Hiring teams should identify applicants whose CDL information still needs verification and complete authorized steps before 8 p.m. Eastern on Thursday rather than leaving the process to the final hour. The same planning principle applies when a driver is completing return-to-duty requirements or when an employer must follow up on a limited query. Do not record an unverified assumption as a successful check, and do not allow a safety-sensitive assignment unless the required Clearinghouse result supports it.
Drivers should make their information easy to match
A CDL or CLP holder registering in the Clearinghouse or resolving an account mismatch should use the legal name, date of birth, license number and state of issuance exactly as they appear on the current credential. Complete planned account work before the maintenance period or wait until service is restored. The outage does not change a driver's Clearinghouse status, remove a prohibition or replace any state licensing requirement.
Use a controlled response if verification fails
If a verification attempt fails during the announced period, note the time and the exact on-screen message under the employer's normal compliance procedure, then retry after the maintenance window. Protect personal information and do not send license data through unsecured messages merely to work around the portal. If the problem continues after maintenance, use the official Clearinghouse support resources rather than creating duplicate accounts or guessing which record belongs to the driver.
CDL trainees should understand which federal system does what
The Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is not the Training Provider Registry. ELDT completion is reported through the TPR, while the Clearinghouse contains drug and alcohol program information for covered CDL and CLP holders. Completing ELDT, passing a permit test or presenting a paper certificate does not substitute for a required Clearinghouse query. New drivers should learn to keep training, licensing, medical and drug-and-alcohol compliance steps separate so a problem in one system is not mistaken for approval in another.
