Heat alerts expanded into Tuesday
National Weather Service offices issued or extended heat alerts late Monday for a broad area of the South-Central United States. Forecasts called for Tuesday heat-index values around 103 to 108 degrees in parts of Kansas and western Missouri, up to 108 across much of Oklahoma and northern Texas, and as high as 109 to 110 in parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and neighboring areas. Exact alert levels and expiration times vary by county, so drivers should check the current warning for every segment of the route.
The driver is the first system to protect
Heat illness can begin with heavy sweating, thirst, headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, or confusion and can progress quickly. Air conditioning may lower exposure while the truck is moving, but drivers can still face intense heat during inspections, coupling, loading, securement checks, roadside delays, or work inside a trailer. Start hydrated, carry accessible water, use scheduled cooling breaks, and do not wait for severe symptoms before moving to a cooler place and notifying dispatch.
Inspect cooling and electrical systems before departure
Check coolant level only according to the manufacturer's safe procedure and never open a hot pressurized cooling system. Look for leaks, damaged hoses, loose or worn belts, warning lights, unusual fan operation, and debris that blocks airflow through heat exchangers. Confirm the cab air-conditioning system, battery connections, and auxiliary power equipment are functioning. A marginal component that survives a mild day may fail during extended idling, slow traffic, or a long grade in triple-digit heat.
Treat tire pressure as a cold-tire measurement
Inspect every tire for damage, exposed material, irregular wear, embedded objects, and correct inflation before the trip. NHTSA advises checking pressure when tires are cold and using the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure. Do not bleed air from a hot tire simply because the pressure increased in operation; pressure normally rises as the tire heats. If a tire shows damage, unusual heat, rapid pressure loss, or a warning-system alert, stop at a safe location and follow the carrier's inspection and repair procedure.
Reefer loads need a separate heat plan
For temperature-controlled freight, verify the setpoint, fuel level, alarm history, airflow path, door seals, and pre-trip inspection result before loading. Confirm who will respond if a unit alarms after hours and where qualified service is available along the route. Minimize unnecessary door openings and record temperatures as required by the carrier and customer. The tractor's fuel plan should not be assumed to cover the refrigeration unit, and a delay caused by heat or congestion may require more reefer fuel than the original dispatch estimate.
Build cooling time into the duty plan
Schedule inspections and strenuous outdoor tasks for cooler periods when operations allow, but keep required checks complete. Identify shaded or air-conditioned stops before entering long rural stretches, and plan for congestion, work zones, and parking demand. A delivery appointment does not justify skipping hydration, continuing with heat-illness symptoms, or operating equipment that is overheating. Federal rules prohibit operation when illness or fatigue makes a driver unable to operate safely.
Trainees should practice a heat-specific go-or-no-go review
A useful ELDT exercise is to review a hot-weather dispatch and identify the active warning area, expected heat index, available cooling locations, equipment checks, reefer contingency, and the symptoms that require immediate action. The decision should be based on current official alerts and the actual vehicle and load—not on a generic summer checklist. Conditions can differ substantially between the departure point, an exposed loading yard, and the destination.
